Function of Job

Employees in positions allocated to this level perform duties requiring a high degree of skill in the installation, maintenance, repair, and calibration of pneumatic, hydraulic, and electronic power plant instruments. They work under general supervision from an Instrument and Efficiency Engineer or other designated supervisor. Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities An Instrument Technician typically – 1. record, integrate, regulate control instruments (such as pressure meters, flow and combustion meters, gauges, and control devices),

 

repairs and adjusts indicating instruments 2. disconnects inaccurate or damaged instruments and makes suitable replacements 3. disassembles instruments, examines mechanisms, cleans parts, replaces worn or broken parts 4. assembles instruments, and checks via testing apparatus 5. calibrates instruments and combustion controls to coincide with established standards 6. conducts scheduled inspections of instruments and makes adjustments to those not functioning properly 7. stores, repairs, and maintains in proper operating condition special testing apparatus (such as Orsats, potentiometers, pilot tubes, and thermocouples) 8. assists members of the mechanics crew as required 9. cleans and dusts instrumentation equipment 10. supervises personnel as assigned 11. performs related duties as assigned INSTRUMENT TECHNICIAN Page 2 CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER 1. Two years (24 months) of work experience comparable to the Steam and Power Plant II or III and/or comparable experience as a Plant Operating Engineer. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs) 1. Mechanical Knowledge: knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance; including power plant equipment, steam-generating equipment, and pollutioncontrol devices 2. Public Safety and Security Knowledge: knowledge or relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions 3. Broad knowledge of power plant operations 4. Computers and Electronics Knowledge: knowledge of systems such as word processing, managing files and records, and other office procedures and terminology. 5. Skill in the Management of Personnel Resources: motivating, developing, and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job 6. Problem Sensitivity: ability to tell when something is wrong or likely to go wrong
